Mekelle Institute of Technology

Mekelle Institute of Technology

Objectives

Produce high-level professionals in the fields of Science and Technology, who can invent and innovate.

Produce professionals who can contribute towards the transformation of our society from that of backwardness and dependency to that of self reliance and vibrancy.

Produce professionals who would apply research that will contribute to enhanced development in the country.

Improve access to education and give opportunity for students who aspire to build their career in the fields of engineering, state-of-the-art communication and information technology.

Expected outcomes

The ultimate beneficiary from Mekelle Institute of Technology will be the nation as a whole.  The establishment of this Institute is a move in the right direction to create a center of excellence.  It is a viable course of action to produce highly qualified and motivated professionals in the areas of science and technology who would significantly and devotedly contribute to the development efforts of the country.  Specifically, it is expected that MIT will contribute to:

  • The improvement and implementation of development programs and activities in the country resulting from the production of reliable highly skilled and qualified manpower in science, engineering and related areas, thereby contributing to poverty eradication and sustainable development;

  • Alleviate crucial shortages of a qualified teaching force in the secondary schools and thereby significantly improve the quality of science and related areas of education in these schools;

  • The laying of a strong foundation for scientific research for the nation by producing capable and innovative researchers.

Major activities accomplished so far

Several activities have been carried out since some six years ago, when the idea of establishing an institute of technology was conceived, discussed and decided upon by the founding members who now constitute the provisional governing board. It was subsequently possible to launch the Institute in November 2002.

The following are some of the major activities accomplished so far:

  • It has been decided that the mode of establishment of Mekelle Institute of Technology would be in the form of foundation enjoying full academic and administrative autonomy;

  • In Consultation with professionals in the field, four departments have been selected as priority fields of study to launch the Institute of Technology;

  • One important factor that made the launching of MIT in November 2002 possible was the acquisition of the buildings and other facilities at the former Management Training Institute at Ainalem.

  • Curricula for the four departments have been prepared and the type and number of academic staff requirement for the entire program have been determined;

  • Teaching materials and equipment have been acquired through purchase and donation;

  • Computer, electrical circuit and digital laboratories have been set up;

  • The Institute's library, which is currently equipped with more than 4000 up-to-date basic textbooks and essential reference materials, has been computerized.

  • The registrar's office has been equipped with modern computer system to properly maintain students' records;

  • The facilities currently at MIT include networked computer labs with a proxy-ed connection to the Internet.  Internally, MIT's servers provide support for Intranet, documentation, email, news, PHP, and many other things.

  • Current work at the Institute includes creation of additional computer labs suitable for teaching, and the provision of a radio (wireless) link to allow more buildings to be networked.

  • The students currently enrolled are comfortably housed in a dormitory and dine in a well-equipped cafeteria that can serve about 500 students at a time;

  • The students have formed their own students union and through it are actively participating in the management of the Institute;

  • Human resource requirement, both academic and support, has been put in place for the initial period; more recruitment of personnel is underway as required.

  • Phase I. of the construction of a new dormitory, which will house more than 400 students, is underway.
