Mekelle Institute of Technology is established as
a private, non-profit making entity enjoying full academic and administrative
autonomy. It is in the process of obtaining its own legal status and will soon
be registering directly with the Ministry of Justice. It has fulfilled all the
requirements to obtain a license from the Ministry of Education.
Mekelle Institute of Technology shall be
established under the umbrella of a foundation having its own governing board. |
Organization of the Institute
The organization of
Mekelle Institute of Technology is based on the principle of participatory
approach to decision-making. By involving its key stakeholders, the
Institute will develop its policies and procedures reflecting its values.
It will at the same time benefit from the experiences of institutions of
higher education both within and outside the country.
Mekelle Institute of
Technology has a Governing Board, which is the highest decision-making
body. The Board will have seven members drawn from different background of
society, supporting the founding principles of the Institute. The Board
determines the academic and administrative policies, the organization and
the Charter of the Institute. It approves the budget of the Institute, and
determines the fees and charges. The Board also approves agreements that
the Institute enters into with other national or international educational
institutions.
The President, who will
be appointed by the Board, will be the chief executive officer of the
Institute. Meanwhile, a Dean, who is responsible for leading the
development of the Institute, is administering the Institute. The Dean
will be assisted by a vice dean.
The Institute will have
an academic commission consisting of representatives from the various
academic and administrative departments and from the students' council.
The major responsibility of this body is to oversee academic matters.
Each teaching department
shall have its own departmental council composed of all teaching staff in
the department. The head of department is also the chair of the council.
The Administration
and Finance Department implements administrative and financial regulations
and policies. This department has a HRD, Finance, Property and Procurement
and General Services Divisions.
